March 2019 Newsletter of the Victoria Bowmen Archery Association

Spring is just around the corner and with that comes nicer weather (hopefully!) and many tournaments! There are many opportunities to compete both indoors AND outdoors, and for all ages, too! To make all tournaments happen, volunteers are always needed. Please consider volunteering for even just a few hours – if you have never competed before you’ll learn how tournaments work and you can cheer on and support your fellow archers – and you WILL be inspired! Read on for all the big events right in your neighborhood!

A few updates on the upcoming provincial championships hosted by the Victoria Bowmen:

The website went live on February 1st and  it contains information on the tournament. REGRISTRTION is now open – hurry and register!

Volunteers are greatly needed. If you could spare a bit of time before, during and/or after the event, could you please send an email of your availability to Mary (maryewills@outlook.com)

  • A large crew is needed at noon on Thursday April 18th to move everything to the Juan de Fuca recreation centre and to assist in set up.
  • Volunteers are needed the morning of Friday April 19th to finalize setup and get the practice session started.
  • We’ll also need volunteers throughout the days of the 19th – 21st to assist in what ever may happen, especially at the change of shooting line times (8AM and Noon) on Saturday the 20th & Sunday the 21st
  • Have computer skills? Experience with databases and/or SQL?  Help is needed for inputting scoring on Saturday April 20th and Sunday April 21st.  Don’t worry – you will be shown what to do.
  • Website experience? Help is needed and greatly appreciated.
  • Volunteers are needed to work the host booth with sales and assistance as required on Saturday and Sunday. If, like last year, a few could be there all day that would be great.
  • Help for the Saturday April 20th night money shoot is needed.
  • Then we’ll need ‘all hands’ again to strike down the equipment and return it to the containers at the range on Sunday April 21st.

If you never been to or assisted with a tournament, don’t worry – you will be shown what to do. Again, please let Mary know if you can help out – even if for a short time!

As of this writing (10 March) we already have 84 registrations. We’ll do our best to get the word out regularly on the web and Facebook – be sure and share what we post.

Clothing and merchandise will be on the website soon. We will also have decals and pins for sale, both using the new ’19 logo.  Any questions or concerns, please contact Al Wills at       (250) 474-4909 or cell (250) 727-8351 (archeryguy@outlook.com)

Remembering Mike Hughes

The club is deeply saddened by the loss of long time archer and Life Member Mike Hughes. Mike was instrumental in building many different field courses at the former property and was the designer and builder of the present longbow bag course. He will be greatly missed.  A memorial tournament and some other tributes are being planned. RIP Mike!
