2019 Newsletter of the Victoria Bowmen Archery Association
Spring is just around the corner and with that comes
nicer weather (hopefully!) and many tournaments! There are many opportunities
to compete both indoors AND outdoors, and for all ages, too! To make all
tournaments happen, volunteers are always needed. Please consider volunteering
for even just a few hours – if you have never competed before you’ll learn how
tournaments work and you can cheer on and support your fellow archers – and you
WILL be inspired! Read on for all the big events right in your neighborhood!
BC Indoor Championships – Friday April 19 – Sunday April 21, 2019
A few updates on the upcoming provincial
championships hosted by the Victoria Bowmen:
The website went live on February 1st
and it contains information on the
tournament. REGRISTRTION is now open – hurry and register!
Volunteers are greatly needed. If you could spare a bit of
time before, during and/or after the event, could you please send an email of
your availability to Mary (firstname.lastname@example.org)
A large crew is needed
at noon on Thursday April
18th to move everything to the Juan de Fuca recreation
centre and to assist in set up.
Volunteers are needed
the morning of Friday April 19th to finalize setup and get the
practice session started.
We’ll also need
volunteers throughout the days of the 19th – 21st to
assist in what ever may happen, especially at the change of shooting line times
(8AM and Noon) on Saturday the 20th & Sunday the 21st
Have computer skills?
Experience with databases and/or SQL?
Help is needed for inputting scoring on Saturday April 20th
and Sunday April 21st. Don’t worry – you
will be shown what to do.
Help is needed and greatly appreciated.
Volunteers are needed
to work the host booth with sales and assistance as required on Saturday and
Sunday. If, like last year, a few could be there all day that would be great.
Help for the Saturday
April 20th night money shoot is needed.
Then we’ll need ‘all
hands’ again to strike down the equipment and return it to the containers at
the range on Sunday April 21st.
If you never been to or assisted with a tournament, don’t
worry – you will be shown what to do. Again, please let Mary know if you can
help out – even if for a short time!
As of this writing (10 March) we already have 84 registrations.
We’ll do our best to get the word out regularly on the web and Facebook – be
sure and share what we post.
merchandise will be on the website soon. We will also have decals and
pins for sale, both using the new ’19 logo.

JOP Indoor Championships – Sunday April 7, 2019
The BRITISH COLUMBIA ARCHERY ASSOCIATION JUNIOR OLYMPIC
PROGRAM (JOP) Indoor Championships are hosted this year by the Victoria Bowmen
PLACE: Saanich Commonwealth place, 4636 Elk Lake Dr, Victoria, BC
FEE: $ 20.00 per archer
Cash or Cheques
(Make cheques payable to BC Archery Association)
TIME: 12:00 pm Equipment
Inspection – 12:30am Start time
minimum of 2 practice ends and straight into scoring)
The format will be a 60 arrow event. Two 30 arrow
rounds shot back to back with approx 20 minutes break in between.

tournament – Outdoors at the Range –
SATURDAY April 6, 2019
***PLEASE NOTE IT’S on SATURDAY not the usual SUNDAY***
****TIME CHANGE and FEE CHANGE*****
Set up for the shoot starts at 9:00 am – all club member
shooters help set up.
Practice starts at 9:30am Scoring
begins at 10:30am. (maximum 45 minutes for practice)
There is a 10-15 minute break between distances.
Members are asked to put away their butts etc if they
leave early and those who shoot the events are asked to help with take down
when the shoot is complete.

Fees are $10 for Victoria Bowmen club members – free for first-time tournament
attendees – $20 for guest competitors.
There will be a hot dog barbeque (with chips and pop) for
participants only (included in your fee)

morning 900 tournament session – approx 12:30pm

The club is deeply
saddened by the loss of long time archer and Life Member Mike Hughes. Mike was
instrumental in building many different field courses at the former property
and was the designer and builder of the present longbow bag course. He will be greatly
missed. A memorial tournament and some
other tributes are being planned. RIP Mike!
