January 2019 Newsletter
Welcome to 2019! Apologies for the late newsletter – it’s been a busy month! A lot is happening with the club – both indoor and outdoor – so read on!
2019 BC Indoor Championships Organizational/Volunteer Meeting THURSDAY Jan 31, 2019
Plans are well underway for our club to again host this event. Our website is up and running, the hall is booked, the host hotel agreement is complete, registrations have begun to come in (even though we haven’t announced the site yet), all we need now is you!!
Our first organizational meeting is set for this Thursday, January 31 at Saanich Commonwealth Place at 7:00 PM. We don’t know the room right now, but it will be posted on the screen behind the front desk.
If you can donate any time during the weekend (April 18 – 21), please drop by and hear what we have planned. More detailed plans will come out as we move along. For now we need help based on the following:
- Thursday April 18 – From noon (or say 2PM) we will be moving equipment from the range to the Juan de Fuca Recreation centre, we will probably be there until 7 or so PM, we will be loading, unloading butts, setting up the nets, marking the floors, setting up tables and chairs and other equipment.
- Friday April 19th – From 9AM we will continue the set up for the opening of our Check-in and Registration at 12PM. From then on we’ll need to be manning the check in desk, we will also have an ‘information and merchandise’ table that will be open for most of the time we are there all weekend. Official practice that day runs until 8PM, but once, we get going afternoon, we won’t require quite as many people
- Saturday April 20th – 7AM is when the doors open, official practice starts @ 8AM, our ‘tables’ will open at 9 and we’ll need a few able bodies to help with unforeseen tasks such as moving butts or running errands. At 5:30PM the money shoot starts, so we need some assistance then too! (moving tables, chairs and butts).
- Sunday April 21st – Same timings as Saturday, except starting at 3:30PM we’ll need as many able hands as possible to do the take down and return of equipment to the range. The more that we have the better as we don’t want to be moving stuff into the night!
We are also looking for someone to look after the merchandise (shirts, hats etc). We will coordinate most of the merchandising through the website, however, this could really use a coordinator. Also our scoring people will need some assistance, so if you have database experience, please let us know.
Mary Wills has offered to coordinate our volunteers, so if you could contact her at firstname.lastname@example.org, with the timings you can volunteer, that would certainly be appreciated, but please still come out on the 31st and find out what this exciting opportunity is all about!! It was lots of fun last year, don’t miss out this year!!
Hope to see you on Thursday!

Archers Anonymous – Saturdays at the range 11-1pm
Are you addicted to archery and looking for folks to
regularly shoot with? Or maybe you are wanting to get back into archery, but
are a bit rusty and need a bit of advice and fine-tuning.
No matter what your level, be sure to come out and join Sergey and the Saturday crew at the range every Saturday from 11am-1pm(ish) for a laid-back, informal practice. Fellowship and archery tips are always available. We’ll be meeting right through the winter, unless there are heavy rains or high winds (watch for time changes due to tournaments), so be sure to bring your boots and bundle up with lots of layers! Bring a snack and a coffee along with your need to feed your archery addiction. No registration needed – just come and shoot for the fun of it!
2019 Indoor Mailmatch Continues
There is still time to register and participate in the 2019 Indoor Mailmatch! Come out on Thursdays during club shoot (7:45ish) and register to participate – $10 for the whole tournament! Please see coordinator Brad Barclay in the gym. For tournament info please see the Archery Canada website at http://archerycanada.ca/en/tournament-information/indoor-mailmatch-0
The outdoor range is always available to members, rain or shine. There IS a garbage bag there on site that club volunteers take away, but please take your own garbage with you when you can (little range critters come and dig in the bag for food).
Indoor Club Shoots
Indoor club shoots are in the gym at Saanich Commonwealth Place – Thursdays from 7:45ish to 9:30, and Sundays from 1:15ish to 3:00pm. Come early to help set up and please stay to help clean up – even if you are done shooting just before practice end-time. Many hands make light work!
