Victoria Bowmen Newsletter February 2007

Hello, here is the latest news for the Victoria Bowmen as of our meeting on 12th of Feb.

Successful Shoots:

Congratulations to Tracy Klat and Doug Bell for hosting 2 very successful tournaments already in February!

Doug hosted the 3D on February 11th and had 51 shooters attend, with lots of interesting shot and many good reports back on how well run it was!

Tracy hosted the MICA (Multi-Sites Indoor Championship of the Americas), which is shot all over North and South America. There were 27 shooters the most for an indoor shoot in a long, long time. It was our pleasure to host the prospective team of the Yukon Territory along with the BC team for the upcoming Canada Winter Games.

The next 3D is March 4th, contact Doug at: 727-9735 cell 812-2169 3Drep[at]victoriabowmen.com

We will be hosting the Victoria site for the Canadian Indoor Championships on March 3rd, $18, contact Tracy at: tournaments{at}victoriabowmen.com

Garbage and the Outdoor Range:

You are asked to not leave garbage at the range, please take it away with you. The range is extremely wet this time of year, please only park on the gravel areas. If you don’t you will get stuck!

Successful Grant Application

After a lot of work by our grant committee, we were happy to find out this week that we did qualify for a gaming grant, which will help our training programs over the next year!

Successful Victoria Bowmen!

Victoria Bowmen JOP Newsletter - February 2007

Weekly Practices

Practice start at 10:15 a.m. and run until 1:00 p.m. There will also be club indoor practice time (open to everyone) from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesdays.

If you are interested in trying 3D or Field shooting come to the outdoor range EARLY Saturday mornings or early Wednesday evenings.  If you are not familiar with the trails you should ask an experienced archer if you may join them.  Most will be happy to have you along with them.

Remember that the outdoor range is open all year around, so if you ever want any extra practice come out any time!  Be careful where you park at the outdoor range this time of year.

Beginner’s Lessons

If you or someone you know has never shot before but would like to learn archery, George Trattner’s beginner lessons are a great opportunity to do so.  A portion of registration fees goes towards club membership if you choose to join.  The next series will begin sometime in late April at the outdoor range.  These lessons seem to be very popular and effective!  Contact George for details.

Helena Myllyniemi is teaching classes for younger children at the Commonwealth Pool.  Contact her for details.

Equipment

If you are looking for archery equipment, here are some sources you can try:

The Buy/Sell section of the web-site has usually got some good used equipment.  Contact Al Wills if you wish to post an advertisement or request there.

George Trattner has a box of sights, stabilizers, quivers, and other equipment on sale.  JOP members may get a special deal on this equipment!  Contact George at equipment[at]victoriabowmen.com.

You can also order in bows and other equipment through Island Outfitters (located at 3319 Douglas St., phone number is (250) 475-4969).  Show your club membership for 10% discount.

Range Closed

The indoor range will not be open for general use on the following dates:

March 13th

March 17th

March 20th

March 24th

March 27th

March 31st

Tournaments

There is an Indoor FITA 1 Tournament on March 3rd, 2007.  Cubs shoot on 60 cm targets and others shoot on 40 cm’s.  Practice begins at 9:30 a.m. and bring lunch or a snack.  60 arrows.  Contact Tracy Klat by the Thursday prior to the tournament to register.

The annual JOP Indoor Championships will be held on March 11th, 2007, in Cowichan, B.C.  The fee is $12, with discounts for families.  Begins with equipment inspection at 9:30 a.m.  The location is Cowichan Bowmen Archery Club, 3044 Doupe Rd., Duncan, B.C.  Wear tournament whites.  Pre-registration necessary – more information on form.

For more information consult Mary Wills, the JOP Director; Tracy Klat, the Tournament Director; or your green JOP book.

Good luck!

Courses

If you are interested in becoming a qualified Judge or Coach, this is where to go!  The Judging Course is on March 31st and April 1st, and costs $60.  The Coaching Course is on April 14th and 15th, and costs $90.  These costs include all materials and are subject to change as we may be able to get a grant.  Register as soon as possible as the courses will only be on if there are more than six people interested.

Note to Parents

You are asked to stay and watch over your children when they are at JOP practice.  When you are absolutely unable to stay and look after them for the whole practice, please arrange with another adult to do so for you.  You can read a book, chat with other parents, even try your hand at archery, or, better yet, volunteer to help with the practice.  If you know a bit about archery you can give the newer kids a bit of casual coaching or teach them to score.  Or you can volunteer to blow the whistle, put up targets, help in the setting up and putting away of equipment, ext.  If you would like a job, please do not hesitate to ask!

Please try your best to get your kids to practice on time and stay the duration of the practice so that they can get the most of the practice and help set up and take down equipment.  It is not fair to leave the work only to a couple of dedicated archers and volunteers.  Also try to come to practice on a regular basis.  Read the Newsletters and mark the dates on your calendars.  Your dedication is very much appreciated!
