Reports:
It is hard to believe that Mary & I have been back from Ottawa for over 2 years now! I had to resign as your president to move and agreed to run again when I came back, I was honoured to do so!
It has been a very busy 2 years, getting us a place to shoot indoors was my first priority and I’m happy that John Stubbs School is working out very well. 911 certainly affected our club; it was a lot of work restoring access to the range. Other projects have included disputing our taxes, re-negotiating our lease and working with the commissionaires through Base Security. And, of course, the Canadian Championships, last year I asked you to consider hosting the event, you agreed and many, many of you contributed to its success, one of the best run Nationals yet and we should know!
I have always been very proud to be a member of the finest archery club there is; the Victoria Bowmen, I have spent countless hours on this range, shot countless arrows (ignore the pun), attended countless tournaments, work-parties and just plain old parties! I think I’ve spent the better part of my life out here! It was from here I started a journey that took me all over the world and ultimately to the Olympic Games. I’ve worked on at least 6 Canadian championships Committees, chairing many of them, many World and Olympic trials, training camps and meetings. I have been President many times and served on the Board for nearly all of my 30+ years as a member. It has been fun, it has been very rewarding, but it has been too long. The club is too much me – it runs too much as I do, it has stagnated because of me and it is time for new blood. No, I’m not going anywhere, nor am I dying! I will continue to help the club and will work with a new Board as required.
I thank you for your support, the drum you gave Mary and I and the Life Memberships are the most prized possessions I have! I hope I have contributed to the success of this club in some small way. I had many good teachers in the many fine people that are and have been members of this club. It has been my pleasure to serve you! Thank you!
Respectfully submitted
Al

Membership Report:
This has been a very busy year for the Victoria Bowmen. We have seen members returning to the ‘fold’ after an extended absence resulting from the lock-down of the range after September 11, 2002. As well, a number of new members have joined the Bowmen and the wonderful sport of archery.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my co-membership director, Keith Pickering, for his help and friendship over the past year, prior to his posting to Edmonton in July. We made a very good ‘membership team’; at least that’s what we were told on a regular basis.
To give you a few numbers to toss around;
At the end of 2001, we had 150 members.
At the end of 2002, we were down to 98 members, mostly as a direct result of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and the resulting heightened security on DND property.
As at September 17, 2003, we have 168 members. This is a 71% over 2002.
I think we can increase the membership in our club even more next year!
Yours in archery,
Lorrie Sommerville
Membership Director
Victoria Bowmen

JR Representative’s Report:
This has been a very successful year for our junior members. Our club can be very proud to know that we have had our juniors participate at a Canada Winter Games, a Western Canada Summer Games, the Canadian National Archery Championships, as well as the JOP Indoors and Outdoors.. We have junior members who shot Canadian records this year. But better still, we have a large number of people excited about the sport of archery. I was happy to see a few junior members begin to shoot FITAs, and would hope that even more begin in the coming year.
Since becoming Junior Representative in September, I have set up an email address (jrrep@victoriabowmen.com) to stay in contact with the junior membership and their parents. On November 3rd, the Halloween Shoot was held, with 30 archers participating, and a large number of volunteers whom I cannot possibly thank enough for all their help, but I’m certainly going to try. I’d like to thank Janis Roberts and Brian Sommerville for help with food preparation, Rueben Boeyenga and Curtis Hobson for help with set-up and take-down, Amrit Sandhar for helping to remove targets afterwards, and all of the archers, for participating. If I have forgotten anybody, I apologize.
Above all, I was proud to see the junior members enjoying themselves while participating in the sport that they and I love. I would like to thank them all for a great year.
