President’s Report:
It has been a
pleasure to serve as President for the club for the previous year.
I have completed my full term as President and will be stepping
aside. The past year has been relatively uneventful. The club
hosted the usual assortment of tournaments that went relatively
smoothly. The club still needs to find an indoor shooting facility
that is suitable. Indoor participation has dropped off a lot with
the biggest impact being felt by the JOP. There is still the threat
of loosing the range to development. Mr. Don Beamish has been
looking after our interests by always telling us what is happening
and saying that he will look after us if we need to move. Greg and
Lynne Durward qualified for the World Archery Championships. The
club continues to support our archers with financial backing. Good
luck to the incoming President.
Thank you.
Vesa Myllyniemi
Vice President’s Report:
With the hard
work of a strong executive the last year has seen our club host many
successful events. The outdoor range seems to be secure for a few
more years though some of our field course area may be taken over.
The indoor situation is still the major problem facing the club.
Much of the Victoria Bowmen’s strength particularly in JOP is
related to a good indoor facility. So the new executive and all
club members must try to solve this long outstanding situation.
Many gains were made on bringing costs more in line with our event
planning and registration costs. A fine team effort.
Bruce Somers
Secretary’s Report:
It’s been a busy year for me, both with the club and personally. I attended all executive meetings during the year; attended the Judging Clinic and seemed to spend all year as a “judge wannabe”. Thank you to Helena Myllyniemi and Marlee Loiselle for being my ‘judge mentors’. I was thrilled to receive my Provincial certification at the BC Outdoors and look forward to many more years of judging
Treasurer’s Report:
Financial statement for the year ending September 26,
2001, was provided.
Motion: “That financial statement be accepted as provided”
MOVED / SECONDED / CARRIED L. Sommerville / B. Somers
K. Pickering was unable to attend the meeting, however as at August 31, 2001, there were approximately 150 members.
Tournament Director’s Report:
Victoria
Bowmen hosted the Canada Cup, eight FITA Stars, one Canadian FITA,
and the Queen Victoria 900 round. All tournaments were well
attended by club members and other clubs from across Canada. The
tournament results are posted in the clubhouse and on the club
website. The tournament information sheets and results have been
submitted to BCAA and FCA.
Victoria Bowmen hosted a Provincial Level Judge Course. Our club
members that took part were Janis Roberts, Vesa Myllyniemi, and
Lorrie Sommerville. Lorrie is now a certified Provincial Level
Judge.
A revenue and expense breakdown for the tournaments was provided.
JOP Director’s Report:
Our indoor season at the Naden drill shed saw many new
kids come out once only. I hope we can find some place soon as we
are loosing new members.
Outdoors this year was quiet because of being a non-BC Games year.
I hope next outdoor season will be better. If Cowichan Bowmen does
a 900 Round again, it should give the kids competitions to work
for. I am hoping for Parksville to do one also. Next summer we
will put on the JOP Outdoor Championships at the end of June.
I would like to thank Mark, Harvey and Mike (Morgan) for the arrows
and from Harvey two bows. For all those who brought cardboard to
the target butts, thanks. It is doing what I hoped it would do,
stop arrows from hitting the bar. If anyone hits the bar, please
let me know.
I started a class at the Commonwealth Pool on September 24th,
which will go until October 29th.
The Commissionaire at the gate would like written procedures for
allowing non-members into the range.
Publicity Director’s Report:
Absent – no report
Bowhunting Director’s Report:
Held three 3D Shoots, (approximately 120 shooters – with a collage of disciplines.). The Hard Luck Shoot to be held October 14th. Animals requiring repairs were fixed.
Trophy Director’s Report:
No Report
Field Director’s Report:
Due to university and working, I was only able to attend 1 of 12 meetings. I feel the field course is still feasible, but will require a lot of hard work to get it back in shape
Equipment Director’s Report:
There were no major purchases this year. We sold the old lawnmower, purchased donna conda, and did the usual maintenance, and got the woodstove

2. Open House:
Discussion arose regarding the possibility of hosting an Open House if we get an indoor facility. Advertising would be required. Al Wills provided information regarding required insurance and liability coverage. Decision made to forego an Open House for this coming year.
3.
Indoor Facility / Portable Toilets:
Discussion regarding possible indoor sites, with the search
continuing. The cost to pump out the portable toilets is $30;
these ‘porta potties’ are environmentally friendly.

Meeting turned over to the incoming President, Al Wills:
As most of you know, we spent last year in Ottawa. Mary and I thank
you for honouring us with Life Memberships at last year’s Annual
General Meeting. The members of Victoria Bowmen are special people,
and we are very glad to be home in Victoria.
As we go forward in 2001/2002, we must continue with strict
budgeting. We need to look at our fee structure. Our lack of an
indoor facility is causing us to lose members. Victoria Bowmen need
to host a major event or raise the membership fees.
We need to communicate with our members; paper doesn’t make
communication. The club has a website that provides current
information. I will take on the task of emailing information to
those members who have provided email addresses. We have a notice
board and there is word of mouth. I have been working with Greg
Birtwistle on a few possibilities for an indoor facility.
